Question:
Hello Richard,
We really enjoy your TV show! I was impressed with your horsemanship. I do have a little problem with a young mare I have. She is almost 5 years old, a good smart horse, I have owned her for a few months. She has a little problem (as most do) when we ride away from the barn/corral she rides nice and then after a mile or sometimes sooner she decides she’s had enough and turns around. Of course I stop her and begin to turn her back on track but she gets mad, may buck, kick and back up crazy like. What I am currently doing, as of
today's ride, is just pulling on the reigns and saying whoa very calmly. She does stop! Then after waiting for a few seconds I get her to head back in the right direction. This does seem to work but she will do this every few minutes or so. Am I doing the right thing? She does try to please but I think someone before me let her go home. Anyway... thanks for the great show.

Exciting News!
Road to the Horses' Newest Competitor!

We're excited to announce that Richard has been selected as the third and final competitor for the 2009 Road to the Horse Colt Starting Competition! The world’s biggest and most prestigious competition of this kind will be held on March 14-15, 2009 in Franklin, Tennessee. Richard will join horseman John Lyons and Tommy Garland in an “edge of your seat” challenge as they start three wild, never before ridden, young horses.
Each year this contest unfolds to a sell out crowd of over 6,000 spectators. 2009 is anticipated to be the most exciting challenge to date. We had the opportunity to watch the competition ourselves this last year in Tennessee. From the day we arrived, throughout every show, up until the closing ceremonies, we realized this was a five star event that we wanted to be a part of!
We want to say a special thanks to Tootie Bland (Producer of Road to the Horse) for honoring Richard with this invitation. We encourage you to learn more about Road to the Horse at
www.roadtothehorse.com. Tickets go on sale May 12th and sell out quickly. Make plans to be there. We look forward to seeing you in our cheering section!

Horsemanship – A Lifelong Passion
For nearly three decades Richard has dedicated himself to honing his horsemanship skills and to passing this knowledge onto others. His vast experience includes starting literally hundreds of horses that have gone onto almost every equine discipline imaginable. Richard's credentials extend from the rodeo arena and high dessert ranches of the west, to being a highly sought after trainer and horsemanship clinician.

Richard considers himself a product of many great horsemen that he has had the privilege to ride with. The absence of a fixed destination fuels his passion. “The further I go in my horsemanship, the further there is to travel while on this journey!” From the weekend trail rider to the competitive world of three day eventing and reined cow horses, Richard makes it possible for people to realize their horsemanship dreams.
Richard’s credentials include
World Championship Titles in the National Reined Cow Horse
Association along with being an A rated judge. In 2007 he
was named champion of the West Coast Equine Experience

Much of Richard's work has been accomplished through the numerous clinics he conducts around the country. He also enjoys being a guest presenter at various Horse Expo's.
A love for horses, knowledge developed through years of practice and study, and a willingness to continue learning, are the components that make Richard the “Masterful Equine Communicator” that he is today.
